This workshop provides an introduction to the formal, spatial, and functional aspects of earthworks through a series of modeling and graphic exercises. Participants will explore the dialog between the sculptural aspects of landform modeling and dynamic landscape processes. We began with a series of skill-building exercises in sculpting basic forms in plastilina. In the second part of the workshop, we model more complex and nuanced landscape surfaces derived from reference materials such as draped fabrics and found objects, and speculate on how the scale, slopes and textures of these surfaces will affect plants, soils, and water. Participants will develop skills in modeling clay landforms and in translating physical models to digital and conventional two-dimensional representations.
