EROSION OF CONFORMITY
Radical Erosion Control Aesthetics

Erosion and sediment control design applications tend towards pragmatic and economical solutions. Thus our engineered landscapes—infrastructural, recreational and industrial sites—share a similar visual aesthetic: either a highly engineered appearance, or a naturalistic look. This presentation proposes that industry standard erosion control materials and applications have not been fully explored for their aesthetic potentials. Are there hybrid possibilities, beyond the engineered and naturalistic appearances, that are also safe, ecologically sound, economically viable, and pragmatic? Can a new aesthetic approach to traditional materials and techniques result in a compelling visual identity for engineered landscapes?
